AI Overviews and Affiliate Marketing: What 1,761 SaaS Search Results Show in 2026

Last updated: September 2026. Data collected September 23, 2026 (Google US, English).

AI Overviews now sit on top of almost every SaaS review search. In our data, Google showed one on 98% of "[brand] review" results pages and on 100% of "[brand] alternatives" pages. For affiliate marketing, that means the click you used to win with a review is now fought over inside an AI answer.

We pulled 1,761 live Google results pages and asked ChatGPT and Gemini 479 questions for the Recurring Commission Atlas AI search report. This post is what it means for affiliates, in plain terms.

TLDR

  • Google showed an AI Overview on 89% of the SaaS review, alternatives and pricing searches we checked (atlas data).
  • Review searches are shrinking. 86% of 177 "[brand] review" keywords fell year on year. The median drop was 50%.
  • Independent sites earn the biggest share of AI Overview citations (36%). YouTube is cited in 53% of the overviews that list sources.
  • ChatGPT and Gemini never named 48 of 117 top recurring affiliate programs across 326 category answers.
  • Pages that get quoted keep their value. Pages that only rank lose clicks.
  • The long-term fix is owning your audience: email, SMS and a community. HighLevel runs all three in one account.

Who This Is For

  • Affiliate marketers who write software reviews and comparisons.
  • Agencies and creators earning recurring commissions on SaaS tools.
  • Bloggers who saw review traffic drop and want to know why.
  • Anyone deciding where AI Overviews leave room for affiliate content.

We checked Google's top results for five kinds of commercial software searches.

Search typeResults pages checkedAI Overview shown
"[brand] review"42298%
"[brand] alternatives"261100%
"[brand] pricing"46775%
"[brand] affiliate program"53292%

Pricing searches are the exception. Google often sends people straight to the vendor's pricing page.

Everywhere else, the AI answer is the first thing a buyer reads. A blue link now sits below it.

Review Searches Are Shrinking

We looked at 177 "[brand] review" keywords with at least 50 US searches a month.

  • 86% were down on the previous year.
  • The median change was -50%.

Not all of that demand is gone. Some of it moved into ChatGPT and Gemini, where people ask a full question and get an answer without clicking.

The review results pages that remain are crowded. Across 422 review top 10s, Trustpilot appeared 376 times, Reddit 312 times and G2 246 times.

19 review top 10s had no independent site at all. In 80, an independent site held #1. So there is still room. It is just narrower.

Who Gets Cited Inside AI Overviews

AI Overviews listed 8,503 sources across the pages we collected. Here is who they were.

Source typeShare of citations
Independent sites (blogs, affiliates, media)36%
Forums and video (YouTube, Reddit, Quora)23%
The vendor itself19%
Review platforms (G2, Trustpilot, Capterra)18%
Rival vendors4%

The single most cited domain was YouTube, with 1,558 citations. It appeared in 53% of the AI Overviews that listed sources. Reddit appeared in 19%.

The independent sites cited most often were eesel.ai, coldiq.com and salesforge.ai. All three are software companies publishing "best X" content.

That is the real competition. Not other affiliates. Vendor content teams.

What ChatGPT and Gemini Recommend

We asked both engines, with web search on, for the best tools and the best recurring affiliate programs in 79 categories. That produced 326 answers.

The most named brands were HubSpot (53 mentions), GetResponse (35), ActiveCampaign (28), Kit (24) and Systeme.io (22).

48 of the 117 programs on the atlas board were never named once.

For affiliates, that cuts both ways:

  • Less AI competition for those brands.
  • No free AI visibility either. You have to create the demand.

When the question was about affiliate programs, both engines leaned on small affiliate-list sites. Data-backed directories get cited. Rewritten vendor copy does not.

What AI Overviews Mean for Affiliate Marketing

The goal changed. Ranking is no longer enough. Being quoted is the win.

Five things that follow from the data:

  1. Lead with a dated answer. Put a direct answer in the first two sentences. That is the block AI Overviews lift.
  2. Publish numbers nobody else has. Real prices, commission terms, test results. Date them. Unique facts get cited.
  3. Pair key pages with a short video. YouTube shows up inside half of the overviews. A written review plus a video covers both source types.
  4. Pick programs where independents already rank. Our winnability score filters for that.
  5. Track AI mentions, not just rankings. We covered the tools in how to track AI Overviews rankings in 2026 and how to track rankings in AI Overviews.

Own Your Audience Before the Clicks Shrink Further

Every AI answer that satisfies a buyer is a click you did not get.

So the traffic you do get has to turn into something you own. An email subscriber. An SMS contact. A community member.

That is where recurring affiliate income becomes stable. You stop depending on one search result.

HighLevel runs that stack in one account:

  • Funnels and forms to capture readers from your reviews.
  • Email and SMS workflows to send follow-ups, comparisons and deal alerts.
  • Communities with paid groups and recurring subscriptions, so your best readers pay you directly.
  • A CRM that tracks which subscriber clicked which program.

SMS in the US needs A2P 10DLC registration first. Email needs a verified sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

If you already promote software, HighLevel publishes an affiliate marketing agency playbook with ready-made funnels and workflows. Start the account from the 30-day trial link below instead of the playbook page's own button.

Which Affiliate Programs Hold Up Best

Programs with pricing and comparison demand hold up better than review-only ones. Pricing searches still show AI Overviews less often.

Recurring programs matter more than ever. If each click is harder to win, each referral should pay every month.

We ranked 117 recurring programs against HighLevel's 40% lifetime terms in the best SaaS affiliate programs with recurring commissions. The HighLevel terms are broken down in the HighLevel affiliate program, 40% recurring explained honestly.

FAQ

Do AI Overviews hurt affiliate marketing?

How often do AI Overviews appear on software searches?

Very often. In our September 2026 data, 98% of review searches, 100% of alternatives searches, 92% of affiliate program searches and 75% of pricing searches showed an AI Overview.

Which sites do AI Overviews cite for SaaS reviews?

Independent sites get 36% of citations, forums and video 23%, vendors 19% and review platforms 18%. YouTube is the most cited single domain, followed by G2, Trustpilot, Reddit and Capterra.

How can affiliates get cited in AI Overviews?

Answer the question in the first two sentences, publish original dated data and pair important pages with a short YouTube video. AI Overviews quote specific facts and skip generic copy.

Yes, more than one-time programs. When clicks are harder to win, a referral that pays every month is worth more. HighLevel, for example, pays 40% for the life of the customer.

How do affiliates protect income from AI search changes?

Turn visitors into an audience you own. Capture emails and SMS contacts, then follow up with comparisons and offers. A platform like HighLevel handles funnels, email, SMS and paid communities in one account.
